Contemptor Dreadnought

Adeptus Custodes Contemptor Dreadnought with multi-melta

The decision about which arms to go for on the Contemptor Dreadnought for the Adeptus Custodes has been made. Magnetise them and have both. After that decision, the rest should be easy. Right?

Magnetising the arms on the Contemptor model was actually harder than first thought. Due to the way the model is constructed the arms and body where they attach are hollow. This meant that even using the smallest size magnet that could still manage the load I had to drill all the way through the plastic.

Normally when using a magnet the idea is to place it into the plastic and glue it. This ensures a good contact area for the glue to stick to the bottom of the magnet. Because a decent size magnet was needed it meant drilling right through the plastic so that it would sit flush. Otherwise, the arms wouldn’t fit. This then involved a rather tricky gluing attempt. The magnet needed to be placed into the hole without falling inside the arm or body. After placing superglue all around the hole and getting glue all over the place the magnet was successfully squeezed into the hole without slipping through. multiply by three and magnetised weapons complete.

Time For Some Gold

After getting the arms finished it was time for some undercoat and base coating. These Adeptus Custodes have all been undercoated with Retributor Gold spray so the dreadnought got the same treatment. Although it’s on the expensive side the Retibutor spray has made the base coating much quicker. As it has been going straight onto the plastic as an undercoat as well it’s worth the money I would say.

The next step on the dreadnought was a wash of Agrax Earthshade into all the crevices. For this, I used a paint-on technique just where I wanted the shading rather than all over the model. After the shading with Agrax, it has been given a drybrush highlight. This has turned out so subtle though I think it will need some edge highlighting as well.

Getting close to the halfway mark of the month. The plan is to try and finish this whole contemptor dreadnought by the end of the week. With some base coating of the squads in between as well. I have a busy week ahead!
