New 40k!

The plan was to sit down and paint for the night. Then watch the big 40k reveal stream on twitch and keep painting. Painting didn’t happen though when rumours started flying of the new 40k being released a few hours before the stream.

Sure enough, the announcement of a new 40k came. Those leaked FAQ’s were true. And that intro video certainly got our attention. No time for painting when a new game is on the horizon and you are being told all about it.

So what are the first thoughts? Well after the amazing intro video they had my attention. Admittedly when it comes to Warhammer 40,000 it doesn’t take much. It always has a special place as it was the game that got me into the wargaming hobby. If I had been super involved in just 40k for the past few years I might be annoyed thinking it’s too soon. As I’ve mixed the games and painting up a lot over the past few years I haven’t been heavily invested in the current version of 40k. So personally this is actually really good. All three of the guys here are getting back into GW so a new edition is a great chance to really get into the rules again. Plus those new minis look great. What little we actually saw of them anyway.

New Miniatures

New models are always a good thing. The way technology changes, new minis are usually a lot better than past versions. Just look at the difference between Fury’s Reaver Titan and Fairy’s Reaver Titan to see a comparison and example of that. The Necrons are different and add some nice variety. With the brief looks at the Silent King, it also appears to be a great model. From what we could see! So the idea of a new box set with Necrons it is promising as well.

Personally I have a large Necron army that needs finishing so I’m on board with a Necron boxed set. I’ve also just started planning how to do my Primaris Space Marines that are sitting in various boxes so any more will add to that army. The hint at a box that may include Marines, Necrons and Sisters though is very cool. I’d end up with several if they do that.

More Than Models

So some new models and a new set of rules got me excited. There were a couple of things that made it really great for me though. The idea that all game sizes are going to be catered to and provide play-ability is amazing. One thing that drew me away from 40k over the years was just the size and length of the game. Not everyone has a regular few hours every week for a game so to see mention of small size games being factored into the design of the new rules is excellent news.

The second point that has me excited is the app. Sure, there are apps already out there like Battlescribe but an app with pictures of your minis and links to army books and rules is just what the doctor ordered. The AoS app is actually pretty good so hopefully this new 40k one will be up to scratch as well. I’ve leaned toward buying digital codex lately just for ease. But I still love the hard copies. I’d really like to see a code for the digital version come with a hard copy so to see something like that incorporated into the app would be great. Don’t think it will happen though.

The final point that tipped me over the edge on the new 40k was the way they described the new crusade campaign narrative system. I’m someone who is far more into the stories and lore of 40k then the game itself. Narrative campaigns make the game come alive. So the thought of being able to see squads gain experience and move through stats and skills in a 40k set of rules is great news. The announcement of a new 40k definitely has us excited and planning new armies.
